Me and My Drums
So a lot of my Hair School BFFs have asked to see my drums (I think some of them think I'm lying). So, Here is a vid of me and my drums! This is one of my favorite songs to play! It starts out a bit slow but just give it a sec! Sheesh!
Color Week!
So, this week marked the beginning of what we call: "Color Week," which most of us have been looking forward to since day 1. So, it's been great. Learning about Color Theory and the Color Wheel in addition to the actual formulation of the various types of hair color and how to mix 'em right.

So, what inspired you to go to Hair School?
Sorry Friends, I know you mean well. But, I never really know how to answer that question. And a lot of times, it kinda carries a tone of: "are you serious? What were you thinking?" But seriously, I know you mean well and I'm grateful for all the support that I have received.
In an effort to answer your question... "what inspired you to go to Hair School?"

Donks
But seriously though... This is what we went over this week:
1. Blow Drying: Flat Wrapping, Round Wrapping, Leafing and Round Brushing.
2. Flat Ironing (but we call it a "smoothing iron").
3. Ironing with The Marcel Iron
I actually really enjoyed learning about Blow Drying for Control (Flat Wrapping and Leafing) versus Blow Drying for Volume (Round Wrapping and Round Brushing). And trying out Barrel and Spiral Curls on the Marcel Iron was fun too.
Another day for You and Me, You and Me in paradise
Paul Mitchell The School Service Menu Prices*
So, if you weren't aware already, you can come on in to the School to get your hair did. Of course it will be done by the students that are currently enrolled in the cosmetology program, so the prices are GREAT*. But, don't be nervous. There is a full time professional stylist overseeing the entire process to answer any questions and offer assistance. The results are great, it just takes a bit longer. Most of the time, the stylist that will be serving you has already earned enough hours to be working full time in a salon, but in Utah we have to study for 2,000 hours. Many states only require 1200-1600. As you will see, the school offers a TON of services and it's definitely worth checking out if you want to save a few bucks. You can choose between Phase One (student stylist) or Phase Two (student's that have been "hired" to work in an advanced capacity). Haircut: $8 or $12 (Phase 2)
Flat Iron: $5/$10 Long Hair or $7/$14 Long Hair (Phase 2)
Updo: $15/$20 Long Hair or $20/$25 Long Hair (Phase 2)
Basic Color: Starts @ $25 or $30 (Phase 2)
Foil Weave (10 Foils): Starts @ $30 or $40 (Phase 2)
Full Foil Hi-Lights: Starts @ $40 or $50 (Phase 2)
Perm: Starts @ $25 or $30 (Phase 2)
Scalp Treatment: $6 or $7 (Phase 2)
Deep Condition: $5 or $7 (Phase 2)
Honestly, that is just a sample of the services offered. Call us up and come in. It's awesome at the school and you'll have a lot of fun with us!

Lil bit of Inspiration to Work Hard in School
So it wasn't too long ago that I stumbled upon this music video on Facebook. After watching it for a while it dawned on me that the Girl you see in the Vid is my friend Mikaela! Yeah, like I KNOW that girl. She is down in Provo and not only is she in music videos, she does hair for music videos. In fact, that is how she got into this one. Pretty cool. P.S. She graduated from Paul Mitchell the School Provo and is now an Instructor there! So, basically... work hard, be awesome and you can be a music video vixen or rockstar! Haha, I don't know about you, but that is my Best Case Scenario.

Rooster in the Hen House! A Boy in Beauty School. Listen Up Guys

Are you a guy considering a career in Cosmetology?
Are you wondering what is might be like for a dude in Beauty school?
So, I'm really am an average Joe. I love rock music, playing the drums and motorcycles. I don't always do my hair and sometimes if I wake up late, I'm totally ok with a quick Whore Bath instead of a shower. I like camping, hiking, guns and a good steak. Why am I telling you this? Because I am a dude... in Hair School.
I have never had any reservations about attending beauty school. I know what I like and I don't see any conflict with my lifestyle and everything that is good and exciting about cosmetology. I like nice things. I like beautiful things. I like beautiful people. I like Fashion and style. You probably do too. Well, I am fortunate to be in a school were we study beautiful things... or at least how to make things beautiful. There is good music, good energy and the majority of the student body is made up of pretty girls. Their ages range from barely graduated from High School to the 50s. I'm 27, and I was very happy to find that there is a really solid number of people my age as well. I wonder why more guys aren't already beating down the doors to get in!
There is plenty of room for guys in beauty school. My class is pretty big for Paul Mitchell. We are about 30 in number, compared to most other classes that may be around 16-18. We have 5 men in my class including myself and as far as the other classes that are farther along in the program, there are actually a lot of guys. The school loves having the guys to bring a new dynamic to the classroom. And, every girl I have ever talked to about it, says that guys have a ton of advantages when it comes to getting a job and building clientele. People just assume that a well dressed and professional looking man working in a salon MUST be a great stylist.
I was worried at first that I would be at a huge disadvantage because a lot of girls grow up their whole lives doing their own hair and probably many of their friend's hair as well. I figured that most girls have had a ton of experience with curls, perms, color etc... well many have. But, I've been surprised that most of the girls in the class have just as many questions as I do and the ones that already know quite a bit, are a great help to me. Trust me, girls LOVE helping dudes figure things out. I think they think it's kind of fun to be talking to a guy about things their boyfriends will never care about and they are intrigued that you do. As far as the curriculum itself, it does not assume that anybody knows anything. It is very complete and starts from the very basics. So, it really doesn't matter how much you know. The school exists to teach EVERYBODY. It is a surprisingly level playing field.
I gotta tell ya, I'm having a blast and the environment not to mention the people are crazy and fun. I am looking forward to spending the next 15 months at Paul Mitchell the School. It all started because I took a free tour of the facility and looked into the financial aid. I got a grant and a subsidized government loan and the rest is history. Everyone on campus is extremely supportive and friendly. And every single one of my stylist friends has been nothing but encouraging and excited for me to begin. I really thing more guys should think seriously about getting into it. The money is great and the experience is pretty rock 'n roll if you ask me.
Day #4 @ Paul Mitchell The School

So, my first week @ the Paul Mitchell school is almost over, and I can really feel the time flying by. They are always letting us take a break or playing a game to keep us engaged and focused. For my ADD behind, this is good news and it makes the day go by in a snap. For instance, today we learned about "draping." Basically draping is just the process of covering/protecting the client or "guest" with the appropriate cape and additional towel or tissue around the neck, depending on the services you'll be providing. To help us digest the information Kevin, our Learning Leader, informed us that we would be having a "draping rodeo" right in the middle of the salon floor! Basically, it was a relay between two teams to see who could drape the quickest.
Towards the end of the day we actually got to practice giving each other 5 minute scalp massages. Which was most triumphant given the fact that I had just finished doing my first "shampoo set" ever. If you are wondering what a shampoo set is, just think Sophia from the "Golden Girls." It boils down to a good shampoo and conditioning and while the hair is still wet, you "set" the hair with a healthy does of "Goop" and some rollers.
Day #3 @ Paul Mitchell The School
So, apparently we are going to be learning and practicing braids but will not be tested on them. Which makes sense since nobody I know goes to a beauty parlor or barber to get braids.

My Favorite part of the day was learning about, and practicing "Finger Waves." This is something I hope to get a lot better at. I love the way it looks and I want to be a lot more comfortable doing them. Finger Waves were made most popular back in the 20's-30's but are making a really solid comeback in music videos and photo shoots.
My first "Corn Row." It wasn't actually too hard. It's basically just an inverted french braid.
This is my first "Fish Tale" braid. Ali, the girl sitting next to me is a braiding machine and showed me how to do this.
Welcome to the Jungle
So, Tuesday, August 11th began my journey into the dark and sexy world of Hair School! Haha, and I couldn't be more excited! I am attending Paul Mitchell the School on about 45th south in SLC. The program takes about 15 months, during which I will be learning everything I need to know about styling, cutting, basic skin care and my favorite: The Straight Razor! Sweeney Todd Style!

To keep with the "all black" dress code, I had to fill in a couple holes in my wardrobe... which is fine, cause I love black.
Banana Republic Fitted Polo, G Star Raw Long-sleeve Button-up and BR fitted V-neck.
Commune Fitted Skinny jeans from Urban Outfitters, Rock & Republic Straight Leg Jeans and G Star Raw Weird Pant. I'm still on the hunt for a sturdy black belt.
Back to the Basics: All black Converse All Stars, one of the best ways to spend $35. I'll get some good use out of these at Metal shows and performances. Rock solid foundation to any metal wardrobe.
